The balance of the regiment meantime made a reconnaissance in the direction of Pound Gap. When near West Liberty a skirmish took place with a portion of Clay's command of rebel cavalry.
On April 28th the regiment moved to Louisa, Ky., on the Big Sandy river arriving there May 3d, and with the 39th Kentucky infantry, the two regiments constituting the 1st brigade, 1st division, army of the Ohio, military district of Kentucky, being employed in protecting the eastern part of the State from the incursions of parties of thieving rebels from Virginia, and had been engaged with the enemy at Pound Gap, May l7th, and on the 20th at Hazel Green. On May 25th, the regiment with its division moved up the river as far as Piketon, where it was ascertained that the enemy under Morgan had entered the State through Pound.
