" On the 30th of October last the llth Michigan Cavalry left Lexington, Ky., for Mount Sterling, where they arrived on the 31st and established their camp, supposing that the regiment had settled down for winter quarters. But on the next day, November 1st, the regiment was divided up into detachments as follows, for the protection of the eastern part of Kentucky against the numerous bands of guerrilas and robbers who infest the mountains of this part of the State, robbing and murdering the peaceable citizens without mercy, at the same time claiming the name and protection of Confederate soldiers.
